The sub-regional program for the fight against malaria in Central Africa

aims to assist countries in control actions, with a view to a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality linked to malaria in the sub-region according to the objectives of international initiatives.

The program has the following specific objectives:

1. Contribute to the development, monitoring and evaluation of country strategic plans for the search for funding;
2. Increase the coverage rate of long-lasting impregnated mosquito nets (MILDA) in at-risk populations located in cross-border areas and promote the implementation of intra-domestic spraying;
3. Develop and implement operational research projects on the treatment and prevention of malaria;
4. Train high-level personnel for operational research, epidemiological and entomological surveillance;
5. Promote partnership with a view to strengthening advocacy and harmonizing control actions.

To this end, five strategies have been defined according to OCEAC approaches, namely

• technical support to countries,
• improving prevention,
• research, training and partnership

Fight against human African trypanosomiasis (HAT)
The program aims to eliminate sleeping sickness by 2015 in the CEMAC area, in the DRC and in Angola.
The 2010-2012 action plan on this theme proposed by the Regional Economic Program (PER) will therefore be based on the following main guidelines:

• Combine screening, treatment of patients, vector control and training;
• Coordinate the fight against human African trypanosomiasis in cross-border areas.

OCEAC’s action will be based on a partnership with the WHO and the African Union as part of its « PATTEC » program to support national HAT control programs
